PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of this programme is to provide the learner with an excellent mix of finance, economics, accounting, general management knowledge, skills and competencies for a career in finance and accounting.

RATIONALE

The programme is motivated by the witnessed dynamic change, complexities in the financial and accounting landscape coupled with changing industry and market needs. This has informed an amalgamation of Bachelor of Science in Finance and Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree programmes into one named Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting.

The programme is structured to avail skills towards the fruition of the requirements of financial services under the economic pillar of the vision 2030. Under Vision 2030, it is envisaged that Kenya would be an International Financial Centre and achieve capital markets deepening. The programme is aimed at equipping students with the requisite and sophisticated knowledge base in emerging and contemporary issues in finance and accounting that will aid in actualizing Vision 2030. It is part of the broader goal of raising the next generation of experts in finance and accounting with world-class competence channelled to the development agenda in Kenya, the region and beyond.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the programme, the learner should be able to:

  1. Explain choices in the dynamic business environment especially on real options, investment vehicles, financing alternatives and risk management.
  2. Explain informed alternatives in public financing, management of public financial resources and accounting for the public sector. 
  3. Prepare financial reports in accordance with GAAPs
  4. Calculate the value financial securities such as equities, fixed income securities and derivatives
  5. Describe auditing and tax matters

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-Face Mode

Lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

Open, Distance Learning, and e-Learning Mode

To be offered off-campus using a multi-media approach, including a variety of self-instructional print and video conferencing materials.

Blended Learning Mode

This is the use of combined face to face and open, distance learning and e-learning modes.

The programme is organized into two parts, Part I consisting of Year/Level I and Year/Level II; and Part II consisting of Year/Level III and Year/Level IV. To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting degree, a candidate must successfully complete a minimum of 48 course units.

The course units are divided into common and core course units that are organized as follows:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Admission Requirements

The following or their equivalents shall be admissible:

  1. Holder of KCSE certificate with a minimum aggregate C+ and a minimum of C in both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili or a minimum grade of B in bridging course offered in the University of Nairobi with at least a C- in the subject at KCSE;
  2. IGCSE six B’s including Mathematics and English and A Level 2 principal passes and 1 subsidiary pass
  3. Holder of a Diploma from a recognized institution and minimum aggregate of C at KCSE or O-level Division III;
  4. Holder of KACE certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and a minimum of a credit pass in Mathematics at KCE;
  5. Holder of KCSE mean grade of C- plus a Certificate and a Diploma from a recognized institution;
  6. Holder of CPA/CPS Part I, CIMA, CIPS, CHRP or equivalent professional qualification with a minimum aggregate of C- at KCSE or O-level Division III;
  7. Holder of a degree from a university recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate with a minimum of C- in KCSE or equivalent;
  8. Applicants whose language of instruction was not English are required to sit for TOEFL exam or provide a TOEFL certificate;
  9. Holder of qualifications deemed to be equivalent to any of the above.

 

Credit Transfer and Exemptions

  1. A student may transfer credits for equivalent course units taken from a recognized University subject to the following guidelines:
  1. The student shall complete the Senate approved credit transfer application form and attach supporting documents.
  2. The course unit taken by the student must meet the required minimum contact hours.
  3. The student must have attained a minimum grade C or equivalent.
  4. The transferred credits shall not be more than 1/3 of the total prescribed course units for the award of the Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting degree.
  1. Credit transfers shall only be applicable in Part I of the programme.
  2. A student who wishes to be exempted from any course unit shall follow the guidelines set out below:
  3. He/she shall send a formal application for exemption to the Academic Registrar by completing Senate approved form for exemption, justifying his request and attaching evidence of the credentials, which would support such a request.
  4. He/she may be required to submit to an exemption examination set and administered by the Faculty.
  5. The Faculty may, for exceptional reasons of academic merit, recommend to Senate the exemption of an applicant from a course unit without being subjected to an exemption examination.
  6. The candidate must have attained a grade interpreted by the Faculty as a passing grade in the course units for which exemption is applied.
  7. Exemptions shall be allowed only up to a maximum of 1/3 of the total prescribed course units for the award of the Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting degree.
  8. Exemptions shall only be applicable in Part I of the programme.

The Bachelor of Science and Accounting Degree offers students an opportunity to pursue careers in a number of fields which include;

Financial planning and analysis, wealth and portfolio management, sales, and securities trading as well as careers in investment banks.

Career and Internship Opportunities.  

Students who pursue this program can work in financial management firms, accounting firms, investment firms and many other financial institutions. They can also work in the banking sector, insurance sector and capital markets.
